The new Uniden R7 Reigns Supreme in Performance

Veil Guy's Uniden R7 Review

Introduction to the Uniden R7 Review

In the Spring of 2017, Uniden took the radar detector industry by storm with the introduction of two class-leading radar detectors, the Uniden R3 and the Uniden R1.  These two radar detectors quickly established themselves as performance leaders and became big sellers, particularly the Uniden R3.

Fast forward two years, Uniden has upped their game with the introduction of the Uniden R7, a GPS-enabled, dual antenna radar detector with arrows, following in the footsteps of the Valentine 1, the Escort Max 360 (now discontinued), and the Escort Max 360c.  While the V1 was the first directional radar detector, it has remained relatively unchanged in its 28 years and does not incorporate GPS.  The Uniden R7 is closer to the Escort Max 360c since that detector is also GPS-enabled.

Unless you have been living on Mars and haven't had an Internet connection back to Earth you already know the Uniden has taken the radar detector industry by storm last year with the release of their top of the line models, the Uniden R3 and Uniden R1.  Both of these radar detectors have shaken up the industry in a big way and Uniden, all by themselves, have redefined what we all thought was achievable in radar detection performance and filtering.

Escort Max 360c Introduction

It's been only a couple of short days since I first wrote about Escort Max 360c radar detector, the first ever to incorporate WIFI.  But since that time, I have been able to accumulate some time behind the wheel with the new Max 360, enough so that I feel comfortable in sharing some of my early impressions, which have generally been quite favorable.

Introduction (the C means connected)

Escort is showing to have a habit of doing things, in time, that they say they are not going to do.

A recent example of that was the release of the new stealth radar detector the Escort Redline EX, a replacement to their outgoing Escort Redline. In the case of the EX, Escort maintained that producing an M3-based radar detector with the capabilities of GPS (like the Escort Max series of detectors) was not feasible and would be too large to be practical. Fast forward a couple of years and the engineering team did just that. The sheer size champ goes to the dual antenna Escort Max 360 radar detector, but up until now, it was the Escort Redline EX that took the weight crown.

Introduction to the Uniden R1/R3 Review

After putting some serious seat time behind the wheel with the new Uniden R1 and Uniden R3 radar detectors, it didn't take long for me to realize how spectacular these two detectors are.

It also dawned on me, that I have been wrong all of these years.  Who likes admitting to being wrong?  Well in this case, I do.  Why you ask?  Simple.  It's because ever since the introduction of the Escort M3 platform of radar detectors–beginning with the Beltronics STi Driver, followed up with the Beltronics STi-R,  Escort Passport 9500ci, and then the Escort Redline–I believed we had essentially reached the limits of radar detection sensitivity.  In other words, I believed if none of the aforementioned detectors alerted to police radar, then a radar signal wasn't actually there to detect.  I believed Escort had summited the tallest mountain above sea level there is–Mount Everest.

Escort Redline EX Prototypes (formerly Redline 2)

Fans of the Escort Redline have a new treat, the new Escort Redline EX (formerly called the Escort Redline 2)

For the last several years, the Escort brand has seen some pretty significant changes at the helm at the hands of its new owner.  As can be the case, things at times may seem "chaotic" or in flux, but eventually from "chaos" can come order.  With Escort–at least from an engineering stand-point–it appears that the brand remains under good stewardship with a continued focus on product innovation, even if those changes are not coming as forthright as some of us would prefer.

 Uniden vs 34.7 Ka-band

Brief Introduction

I've been driving with both the Uniden R3 & Uniden R1 radar detectors in preparation for my formal review and have some very telling police radar encounters.  Particularly noteworthy was several encounters with a couple of Pennsylvania state troopers who ran very low-powered K-band radar at night.

What makes the R3 & R1 especially good in these scenarios:

  • Both the R3 & R1 deliver extreme sensitivity (best we have ever experienced)
  • Quick to detect instant-on police radar
  • Quick to alert to instant-on police radar with minimal processing overhead
  • Very good signal ramp up and decay with excellent latch times
  • Very quick radar band signal differentiation
  • Very good filtering algorithms ensure most alerts are to genuine police radar

These real-world experiences were very telling of the incredible performance that both the R1 & R3 offer, so much so, that I felt it was appropriate to feature them in a new video tutorial highlighting the true value in driving with an ultra-high performance radar detector and how to properly use one when confronted with some very difficult to detect radar encounters.

Radar Detection Greatness in the Making?

Introduction to the Uniden R3 & R1 Radar Detectors

For those of us who have been using radar detectors since the late 70s, the name Uniden may ring a bell and you may be asking yourself, "didn't they used to make radar detectors"?  But perhaps you may not be aware that Uniden has been producing capable windshield-mount models over the course of the last several years, under the proverbial radar.

Radenso SP Review/Preview
Radenso's new entry-level radar detector offers great value for the money

Radenso, the innovative new radar detector manufacturer, has recently released their new Radenso SP.

The Radenso SP, is essentially a Radenso XP without built-in GPS capabilities.  The SP retails for $249, which is $150 less than the GPS enabled XP, which retails for $399.

Even though the SP is now their entry level radar detector, it by no means offers entry-level performance.

Like the GPS-enabled Radenso XP, expect the SP to offer best-in-class K-band blind-spot-monitor filtering as well as traffic sensor rejection, Ka band segmentation, K narrow, frequency display and POP mode.

Say hello to Escort's new top dogs.

After literally years of asking by the radar detector enthusiast community, Escort is finally updating the Escort Passport 9500ci remote installed radar detector platform with what will be their new halo products called the Escort Max Ci 360 and Escort Max Ci. You know the old adage, a rolling stone gathers no moss and that expression is most apt for Escort Radar and its parent company Cedar Electronics.
